Warner Bros. To Give Us More Dune, Sopranos and Matrix
We can expect to see even more of three Warner Bros. franchises according to a recent interview given by the company’s CEO. Namely; Dune, The Sopranos and The Matrix, – all of which are older franchises that have had a recent resurgence.
Dune
Although WB haven’t yet officially confirmed that ‘Dune Part 2,’ is on the way, the film company’s CEO Ann Sarnoff did very nearly confirm that a sequel will be happening in an interview with Deadline. The tease was based on the fact that the first instalment ends on a pretty huge cliffhanger. In the interview, Sarnoff was asked if we will see a sequel to Dune and said; “If you watch the movie you see how it ends, I think you pretty much know the answer to that question.”
There is also the fact that the movie currently in theatres only cover the first half of Frank Herbert’s original epic novel. It has also been said that Denis Villenueve has said that he would only agree to direct the recent Dune reboot if he could in turn split the story in two parts and also direct the second part. The director’s original plan of action was to direct the two parts back-to-back, but studio logistics and the Covid-19 pandemic prevented that from happening.
In an August interview with Total Film, Villenueve sounded optimistic about the film getting a second instalment. “The first thing was to prove that there was a beautiful, popular movie that can exist, and I think that I proved that — everybody at Warner Bros and Legendary, they are 100 percent behind the project. They feel that it would need a really bad outcome at the box office to not have a ‘Dune Part 2,’ because they love the movie. They are proud of the movie, so they want the movie to move forward. And they still did half of it. So, you know, I’m very optimistic.”
The Sopranos
Sarnoff also gave some insight into the future of “The Sopranos” franchise. Although the recent prequel movie, “The Many Saints of Newark” was a box office flop only achieving a measly $4.6 million opening weekend, it did fair a bit better on the HBO Max streaming service. In fact, it did so well on the streaming platform that Sarnoff revealed that more content from the Sopranos universe has entered the early stages of discussion with the series’ creator David Chase.
“We’re thrilled with the results of ‘Many Saints. Yes, the box office was not quite as big, but back again to the demographics of who’s going to theatres. On the other hand, you see ‘Sopranos’ pop into the top 10 of the most viewed series on the service. It’s given it an entirely new life. We’re talking to David about a new series ‘Sopranos’-related on HBO Max. [The movie] literally lifted the ‘Sopranos’ franchise in a new way, so you can’t measure it in and of itself in the box office.”
The Matrix
Sarnoff also spoke a little bit regarding the future of The Matrix franchise, although only briefly. She didn’t go into anywhere near as much depth as she did regarding the other two franchises, simply saying; “Anytime Lana [Wachowski] wants to make a movie, we’re all in.”
